The miniature rat terrier dogs are a small easily cared for dog.
The official recognition of the smaller types of this breed began the true separation of our American breeds. With the development of this smaller dog came the battle of keeping these two sizes separate. Breeding to the small Manchester or Chihuahua was eventually allowed into their bloodlines.

In the mid 1920s, the fanciers of these pets sought a distinct category for their toy dogs. When officially recognized in 1936, those individuals that did not meet the criteria of the standard were “culled” and often found their way back into the breeding programs. The miniature rat terrier dogs are a small easily cared for dog.
